Protesters gathered in front of Senator Thom Tillis’ office in Greensboro Wednesday to ask him to stand against several of President Donald Trump’s recent actions.
About 400 people chanted and waved signs on Northline Avenue in front of the office building where Tillis (R-NC) has local staff members.
They demanded that Tillis vote against Russ Vought as Trump’s budget director. Vought is a key architect of Project 2025.
Vought has also been influential in the federal budget cuts that have been pushed by Elon Musk, another target of the protesters.
Katie Kirkpatrick chairs the Guilford County Democrats, who organized the protest along with Indivisible Guilford County, a progressive grassroots organization.
She says she doesn't know if the Republican senator will break with Trump, but it’s important for voters to be heard.
“This is not the end, this is the beginning," she says. "We will not be silent, we will not go quietly, we will not allow our government to be stolen by oligarchs and felons. We are going to keep the pressure up, keep our voices heard.”
Tillis’ press officials did not reply to a request for comment. The senator is up for re-election in 2026.
