Agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have detained three Winston-Salem residents suspected of being in the country illegally.

An immigration advocacy group says ICE agents picked up the three men in the past week.

Andrew Willis Garces is a spokesman for Siembra NC, a group that helps immigrants as they face ICE detention efforts.

Garces tells the Winston-Salem Journal the actions by ICE are violations of the Fourth Amendment, which protects residents from unlawful searches and seizures by government agents.

Garces believes that while ICE agents have encountered opposition from a number of North Carolina sheriffs, they have continued to work with state probation and parole officers to identify and help remove immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally.

A spokeswoman for the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office says that ICE agents acted within their authority when detaining the residents.
