Lexington City Schools superintendent to step down

Lexington City Schools Superintendent, Anitra Wells, will resign from her position at the end of June, a year earlier than scheduled.

Wells was hired as superintendent in 2018, capping a career in education that began more than 30 years earlier.

School district officials say the board and Wells mutually agreed to release Wells from her contract. By announcing the decision early, the board can begin the search for her successor while she’s still in Lexington.

In a release, board chairman Darrick Horton praised Wells for her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among the accomplishments during her time, the system boosted the number of schools meeting state guidelines for growth from 20% to 80%. The district’s fund balance also improved by about $1.4 million.

Wells’ tenure officially ends June 30, but school officials say she has agreed to a 90-day transition period to assist with the search for her replacement.
