The editor of Bangladesh’s only magazine for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community was hacked to death Monday night in his apartment in Dhaka. Xulhaz Mannan, 35, was the editor of Roopbaan, and also worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). His friend was killed along with him.

The BBC reports that an off-shoot of al-Qaida has claimed responsibility. Here & Now’s Robin Young talks with Sumit Galhotra, senior research associate with the Asia Program at the Committee to Protect Journalists, about the killings, which are the latest in a string of murders of bloggers, journalists and academics in Bangladesh in the past year.
