Winston-Salem police say a man is in critical but stable condition after a workplace shooting Monday while he was trying to intervene during an assault on his wife. A coworker has been arrested.

The incident occurred just after 6 a.m. at the Republic Services facility on Overdale Road in an industrial section on the city’s southeast side. Police say a dispute led to an assault against Shannon Bicking. When her husband, Ethan Bicking, tried to intervene, he was shot.

The suspect then fled.

Both of the victims were taken to the hospital for treatment. Shannon Bicking was listed in serious condition while Ethan Bicking was critical but stable.

Police arrested 61-year-old Lamard Crawford at his home. He is charged with two counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon. He’s also charged with malicious assault in secret, which is filed in cases where the victim is unaware the suspect intends to assault them. Crawford is being held without bond.

Republic Services representatives say the three people involved were all working for the same third-party vendor and that no Republic Services employees were injured.
