Greensboro-Randolph Megasite Moving Forward

A 1400-acre Triad property designed to attract a large manufacturer is set to take a big step forward.

The North Carolina Railroad Company confirmed this week it will buy up 875 acres on the property at a cost of 13 million dollars. That's more than half the available real estate.

The megasite, which is a collaborative effort between several organizations in Greensboro and Randolph County, is a giant stretch of land being prepped to lure major manufacturers to the region.

McCrory Boasts About NC At Economic Forum, But Progress Uneven

Gov. Pat McCrory is boasting about data showing overall wages are going up in North Carolina as he seeks credit for the state's post-recession economy.

McCrory, who is seeking re-election next fall, spoke Wednesday to an annual gathering of business and industry leaders trying to forecast the state's economy in 2016.

McCrory noted the state's unemployment rate improved dramatically since 2013 and is now 5.7 percent, above the national unemployment rate of 5 percent. McCrory also highlighted data showing North Carolina was the only one of the 10 biggest states to see a significant increase in personal income in the most recent government estimates.

SunTrust bank chief economist Gregory Miller said while wages increased nationwide last year, most increases went to technology and other in-demand jobs, leaving out most other workers.

Officer Released From Hospital After Traffic Stop Shooting

A Winston-Salem police officer has been released from the hospital, two days after he was shot multiple times during a struggle with a motorist.

27-year-old Officer Nicholas Wayne Powell was released from a Winston-Salem hospital on Wednesday.

Authorities say Powell was shot early Monday after he and another officer tried to investigate the smell of marijuana from a car stopped for speeding.

Police Chief Barry Rountree says 26-year-old Gary Lynn dragged Powell about a quarter-mile as they struggled inside the car and then shot him.

Police say a gunshot to Powell's chest was stopped by his protective vest.

Lynn has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, fleeing and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. It's unclear if he has an attorney.
