Yes, There's Another Primary In North Carolina On Tuesday

Those campaign placards you've seen along roadsides aren't leftovers from North Carolina's March 15 primary. There's another election today.

Voting places in all 100 counties opened Tuesday morning and will close at 7:30 p.m.

Voters in 11 of the state's 13 congressional districts are choosing nominees in at least one party. There's also one statewide primary — four candidates will be narrowed to two in the nonpartisan race for associate justice. Justice Robert Edmunds is among the four.

Another primary was held March 15, but these races were delayed after rulings by judges on redistricting and an alternate way for a sitting justice to be elected.

The most high-profile congressional primary is the 2nd District GOP race between incumbents Renee Ellmers and George Holding.

As Expected, McCrory Vetoes Coal Ash Commission Bill

Gov. Pat McCrory has vetoed legislation reviving a special commission tasked in 2014 with managing the cleanup of coal ash in North Carolina that Duke Energy keeps in pits.

It wasn't surprising that McCrory blocked the bill Monday evening — he telegraphed his plans two weeks ago when the re-formation of the Coal Ash Management Commission surfaced. The House and Senate passed the bill by what appear to be veto-proof margins. Now, legislators have to decide whether to override.

Bodies Of Missing Swimmer, Search Diver Found In Lake Norman

Officials in Catawba County say the bodies of a missing swimmer and one of three divers who went into Lake Norman to search for him have been recovered.

The other two divers involved in the search were taken to an area hospital. The extent of their injuries wasn't immediately known.

The divers were from Sherrills Ford-Terrell Volunteer Fire and Rescue. Chief Rick Davis identified the diver who died as 28-year-old Bradley Long.

Charlotte Water To Expand Testing For Lead In Drinking Water

The director of Charlotte Water says the utility will expand testing for lead in drinking water after the Flint, Michigan crisis that exposed many homeowners there.

The Charlotte Observer reports director Barry Gullet said the utility will expand testing and communication efforts with residents, partly in response to media coverage of Flint.

Gullet told the city council's environment committee that the utility thinks it's important that its customers know that the city's drinking water is good.

Weather Service: Tropical Storm Makes Landfall In Florida

Tropical Storm Colin continues to move away from the southeastern coast of the United States, but not before dumping heavy rain along North Carolina's Outer Banks.

The National Weather Service dropped a tropical storm warning for northern Georgia, South Carolina and the southeastern coast of North Carolina at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

But the warning continues in part of North Carolina, from just north of Wilmington to Oregon Inlet, which is just south of Nags Head on the Outer Banks.

Forecasters say up to another 3 inches of rain could fall along the Outer Banks. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph are still possible.

Duke Energy reported just a handful of customers without service in eastern North Carolina.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
