North Carolina Prepares For First Winter Storm Of The Season
North Carolinians are readying for the first major winter storm of the season, and Gov. Roy Cooper is urging residents to be prepared.
Snow and other types of wintry precipitation are predicted to impact the area this weekend. Current forecasts call for total snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches in the Triad, with sleet and freezing rain possible mixing in. Mountain areas could see up to 16 inches of snow.
Cooper issued a statement Thursday saying people need to be ready for cold temperatures, hazardous roadways, and the possibility of power outages.
Emergency Management officials recommend having at least three days of non-perishable food on hand, batteries, a fire extinguisher, and exercising caution when operating alternative heaters.
North Carolina Congressional Candidate Withdraws Concession
The Democratic candidate trailing in a North Carolina congressional race marked by an absentee fraud investigation has withdrawn his concession to the Republican.
Dan McCready made his announcement late Thursday in a video posted on social media. Unofficial results showed Republican Mark Harris leading McCready by 905 votes in the south-central 9th Congressional District. But state election officials have refused to certify the results while looking at potential absentee ballot irregularities in at least two counties.
North Carolina GOP Open To New Election If Fraud Found
A leader of the North Carolina Republican Party says the organization would be open to a new election if an investigation were to find a high likelihood that wrongdoing swayed the state's unresolved congressional race.
North Carolina GOP Executive Director Dallas Woodhouse texted a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday saying that the GOP would "fully support a new election" if the state's election board shows that absentee ballot irregularities likely changed the outcome of the 9th district U.S. House race.
Pelosi: House Could Take 'Extraordinary Step' On NC Election
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi says the chamber could take the "extraordinary step" of calling for a new election in a North Carolina congressional district if the winner is unclear amid allegations of voter fraud.
Pelosi said Thursday the House "retains the right to decide who is seated."
She said "any member-elect can object to the seating and the swearing-in of another member elect."
Voter ID Implementing Bill Finalized, Heads To Governor
The North Carolina General Assembly has finalized legislation implementing the voter photo identification mandate approved in a statewide referendum last month.
The Senate voted 25-7 on Thursday to accept House changes to the measure and sent it to Gov. Roy Cooper, a voter ID opponent. Republicans in charge of the legislature can override a Cooper veto if they stay united.
Senate Democrats urged GOP colleagues to delay the vote until an investigation into absentee ballot fraud in the 9th Congressional District is complete. The measure directs state election officials to set rules requiring mail-in ballot requesters to provide ID.

Gov. Roy Cooper and Mecklenburg County officials announced Thursday that the company that matches lenders with consumers will add 436 jobs over the next five years that pay an average of over $100,000.
