New Election Ordered In Undecided US House Race

North Carolina's elections board has ordered a new election in the nation's last undecided congressional race after reviewing evidence that it was tainted by absentee ballot fraud.

The North Carolina State Board of Elections voted 5-0 on Thursday to hold a new election in the 9th Congressional District. The board did not immediately set a schedule.

Following last November's election, Republican Mark Harris had held a slim lead over Democrat Dan McCready in unofficial results from the district running from Charlotte through several counties to the east.

But the state refused to certify the win because of absentee-ballot irregularities.

Harris said Thursday during the hearing that he thought a new election should be called.

Man Gets Prison For Stealing $2M From App State

A California man is heading to prison for stealing nearly $2 million from Appalachian State University.

Ho Shin Lee pleaded guilty to creating a fake company and posing as a construction worker in order to steal the money from App State.

A U.S. District court in Charlotte sentenced Lee to three years in prison.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports Lee was also ordered to pay the $1.96 million he was accused of stealing. The school has already recovered much of the stolen money through civil forfeiture proceedings against the bank accounts prosecutors say were set up to launder money.

The Los Angeles man was indicted in March on 14 counts of money laundering.

North Carolina health officials say 13 people died from the flu in the state last week, raising the death toll for the season to 68.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services also reported Thursday that three additional deaths in previous weeks have been attributed to the flu.

So far, 48 of the victims were ages 65 or older. Another 13 were in the 50-to-64 age group and seven were in the 25-to-49 age group.

For the same time period in the previous flu season, officials reported 212 deaths.

Roof Collapses At North Carolina Daycare; No One Hurt

A portion of the roof at a North Carolina daycare has collapsed, and authorities say recent rain is to blame.

The Hickory Record reports preliminary reports from Fire Inspector Thomas Raper show extra weight from rain caused multiple roof trusses in the center of the building to collapse on Thursday.

Raper says no one was in the building and no injuries were reported. He said Catawba County building inspectors are conducting an investigation into the cause of the collapse. The daycare is closed for now.

Nike Probing Shoe Failure That Led To Zion Williamson Injury

Nike says it's investigating why a Duke basketball star's shoe split apart in the opening moments of Wednesday's game against rival UNC.

Wednesday night's matchup between Duke and Carolina continued their storied rivalry, with no less than former President Barack Obama among the celebrities in the crowd at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

And Zion Williamson was one of the main players they came to see.

But on Duke's first possession, Williamson sprained his knee when he planted his foot hard and his shoe split apart. He fell to the ground in pain and never returned for the Blue Devils.

Nike called the shoe split an isolated occurrence but says it's investigating how it happened.

The morning after the game saw Nike shares slip by about one percent.

UNC won 88 to 72, led by senior Luke Maye.
