Democrat's Election Challenge To NC Sen. Berger Restored
The Republican who is arguably North Carolina's most powerful politician could be facing a Democratic challenger in November after all.
The state elections board on Thursday decided that Democrat Jen Mangrum did enough to establish her permanent residence in the Senate district now represented by Republican Phil Berger. The decision reverses a local elections panel's decision that disqualified Mangrum as ineligible.
Berger also is expected to face Libertarian R. Michael Jordan for the District 30 Senate seat representing Rockingham and northwestern Guilford counties.
Gov. Cooper Announces $7M For Workforce Training
North Carolina community college students hit by an unexpected financial crunch could have a new option to help them complete their degree.
Gov. Roy Cooper said Thursday he's tapping into a federal program that could provide grants of up to $1,000 per semester for students close to finishing their degree or credential.
Cooper's office says up to $7 million in federal funds will be available to help students beginning with the coming academic year. Cooper asked legislators to approve spending $20 million for similar efforts to also help state university and private college students, but that wasn't approved.
Cruise Line To Create Up To 200 Jobs In The Triad
Economic developers in North Carolina say Norwegian Cruise Lines is creating a work-from-home agent cluster which could create as many as 200 full-time jobs in the Triad.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports agents will serve in entry-level positions and will be the first point of contact for guests and travel agents looking to arrange vacations on the cruise line.
The hiring process is expected to begin next Wednesday and could take up to 18 months.
Second Harvest Food Bank Hires New Executive Director
The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina has a new leader.
Eric Aft replaces Clyde Fitzgerald, who retired this year after serving as executive director for the past decade.
Aft has been with Second Harvest for almost a year as the chief operating officer. But he's already been a well-known face in the nonprofit community, having previously worked as an executive with the United Way of Forsyth County. He also worked as director of development for Wake Forest University.
Longhorned Tick – A Livestock Pest – Found In North Carolina
A tick species that's new to North Carolina has been found in the western part of the state.
The longhorned tick was discovered on an opossum in Polk County and reported to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
It's primarily a livestock tick. You'll find them in large groups in meadows and high-grassy areas.
Dr. John Sanders with Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center says the longhorned tick is large in size compared to the standard deer tick or dog tick.
Sanders says preventing and treating a Longhorn tick bite is the same as any other.
