Late Candidacy Could Help Democrats With Supreme Court

A last-minute candidacy for the North Carolina Supreme Court has the potential to dilute votes cast by Republicans this fall for the seat and boost chances for the Democrats to expand their majority on the court.

Raleigh attorney Chris Anglin filed on the last day of filing last week as a registered Republican. That means three people are now running for the seat held by another Republican, Justice Barbara Jackson. Civil rights lawyer Anita Earls is running as a Democrat.

Family Tapes Pool Encounter; Says They Were Hassled For Race

A woman has accused a man of requiring her family to show identification to get into a neighborhood pool in Winston-Salem because they are African-American.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports a video of the encounter this week was posted by Jasmine Edwards on Facebook.

The Glenridge Homeowners Association identified the man as Adam Bloom.

In the video, Edwards can be heard off-camera saying Bloom called police because she refused to show an ID to get into the pool.

Police left after the woman's keycard opened the gate.

Bloom has since resigned from his position as the pool's chairman and board member.

Marker Honors Lumbee Tribe Driving Out KKK In 1958

North Carolina's 1,601st historical highway marker commemorates the Lumbee Tribe driving the Ku Klux Klan out of the county in 1958.

The Robesonian reports the Battle of Hayes Pond sign was dedicated Thursday, during the 50th Annual Lumbee Homecoming.

Robeson County's 16th historical roadside marker honors the confrontation between the Lumbee and Klansmen who showed up for a rally on a January day 60 years ago. The outnumbered Klansmen fled in the face of gunfire from the Lumbee. There were no casualties on either side.

The festival features music ranging from country, honky tonk and rockabilly, to garage, punk, and even some heavy metal.

The Heavy Rebel Weekender has about 50 bands from across the country playing on four stages at The Millennium Center - a venue that is more known for black-tie affairs. There's also a sideshow and burlesque performers, and a classic and custom car show featuring over 500 vehicles.
