North Carolina Board Approves Armed Volunteers In Schools

A North Carolina school board has approved a program which would allow armed volunteers to serve as school resource officers.

The Stanly County School Board has unanimously approved a program presented by Sheriff George Burris. The Stanly County Sheriff's Office will run the program that state lawmakers approved following the 2012 shootings at Sandy Hook School in Connecticut. The program will start at four rural elementary schools.

Poll: Teachers Say No To Carrying Guns

A new poll looks at North Carolina teachers' attitudes about having them carry guns in school.

The Raleigh News and Observer partnered with the Elon University Poll to find out what a sample of almost 400 North Carolina educators thought of the idea.

Poll director Jason Husser says it got an overwhelming thumbs down.

More than 70 percent of responders said they would not take a gun to school even if they were allowed to.

Husser says he was surprised to find that there was no statistical difference between urban, suburban and rural teachers in rejecting the idea.

City Urges Plant To Stop Chemical's Production At NC Plant

Pressure is building to stop production of compounds found in the drinking water of a North Carolina city 100 miles from the chemical plant where they're made.

Spokesmen for The Chemours Co. did not respond Thursday to an invitation to comment after Wilmington's city council urged state officials to force the company to stop making fluorochemicals at the plant near Fayetteville.

Wilmington this week joined New Hanover County and the local water district in urging an end of production of products like GenX used in making Teflon. Local officials say the company can't seem to stop discharging the chemicals into the Cape Fear River.

The latest report marks the fewest flu deaths in the state since the first week in January, when DHHS reported 11 deaths.

Man Arrested In Killing Of Winston-Salem Taxi Driver

A man has been arrested in the death of a Winston-Salem taxi driver.

Winston-Salem police say that 49-year-old Richard Dorman Webb was found dead in his cab shortly before 4 a.m. Thursday.

The door to the taxi was open and police say Webb's death is suspicious.

Police have arrested 25-year-old Calvin Moore Jr. of Winston-Salem and charged him with murder.

Capt. Steve Tollie said Moore had been a customer of Webb. Investigators have not released a possible motive. Tollie said an autopsy was planned Friday on Webb's body. Police say they seized a gun when Moore was arrested.
