Tens of Thousands Without Power After Tropical Storm Michael

Duke Energy says almost half a million people in the Carolinas lost power after Tropical Storm Michael moved through the Triad Thursday.

The storm knocked down trees and power lines, blocking roads and flooding low-lying areas.

The company says it has 6,000 workers responding to the damage, including line technicians and tree specialists. Governor Roy Cooper has warned that people should stay away from downed power lines and assume they could be carrying deadly currents.

Minor river flooding is a possibility that could extend through the weekend.

Michael is being blamed for at least six deaths across the Southeast, including one driver in North Carolina who was killed when a tree fell on his car.

When asked about increasing environmental regulations for hog farms, over half of respondents say it's a good idea, and seventy-nine percent say it's also a good idea for coal ash ponds.

Jason Husser with Elon University says local weather events can have an impact on how individuals think about global patterns.

Fixer Says He Made Cash Payment In College Hoops Scheme

A government witness at a college basketball corruption trial claims he made a secret $40,000 payment to the inner circle of a North Carolina State recruit.

Thomas "T.J." Gassnola told a jury on Thursday that he delivered the cash to an assistant coach at the school in 2015. He said the coach was to give it to a personal trainer for the recruit, Dennis Smith Jr.

Gassnola has pleaded guilty in an alleged scheme to pay off top prospects' families to get them to sign with programs sponsored by Adidas.

A former Adidas executive, a former amateur league director and a business manager are on trial in a Manhattan federal court.

Smith spent one year at North Carolina State and now plays for the NBA's Dallas Mavericks.
