McCrory Declares State Of Emergency For 33 Eastern Counties
Gov. Pat McCrory has declared a state of emergency for 33 counties in eastern North Carolina as Tropical Storm Hermine advances toward the state.
McCrory issued the declaration Thursday after meeting with state emergency personnel to discuss storm preparations, as well as equipment or staffing support needs.
The emergency declaration helps facilitate the movement of resources needed to respond to and recover from the storm. The governor also issued an executive order that waives certain truck restrictions on weight and hours of service in order to facilitate quicker storm response.
The storm is expected to bring heavy rains, gusty winds and flooding to the state beginning Friday night.
Review Of Convictions In North Carolina
Advocates are sifting through 20 old criminal cases for hints of wrongful convictions in a North Carolina community where a prosecutor once tried to railroad three Duke lacrosse players for rape. It's also where a longtime prisoner was freed after a judge ruled DNA evidence cleared him of rape and murder.
Durham County District Attorney Roger Echols said Thursday he'll cooperate with investigating any innocence claims or questionable prosecutions pointed out by the nonprofit North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence.
Insurers Can Revise Subsidized Policies After Aetna Exit
The remaining two health insurers on North Carolina's online marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act are taking another shot at proposing rates and regions where they will offer broadly subsidized health insurance policies.
State Insurance Department spokesman Colin Day said Thursday the agency let insurers Cigna and Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina revise their plans. That's due to the late decision last month by rival insurer Aetna to drop out of the state's market.
A report by the Kaiser Family Foundation says Blue Cross could be the lone option for marketplace policies in 90 of the state's 100 counties.
Kaine To Give 'National Security Address' In North Carolina
Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine is slated to deliver what Hillary Clinton's campaign calls a "major national security address" next week in North Carolina.
The Clinton campaign announced the speech would occur in Wilmington on Tuesday but didn't immediately have more location details. A campaign release says the U.S. senator from Virginia would emphasize Clinton's credentials to be commander in chief and her vision to "make America safer and stronger together."
Kaine last visited North Carolina for public campaign events two weeks ago.
4 Pilots On Restricted Duty After Low Pass Over Stadium
U.S. Air Force officials say four Georgia-based pilots are restricted from flight duties after their military jets swooped low over a football stadium in Charlotte as the Carolina Panthers practiced.
Officials at Moody Air Force Base in south Georgia say four A-10C Thunderbolt IIs flew over Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte at low altitude Monday. The pilots will be on restricted duty pending results of inquiry into the incident.
Air Force Col. Thomas Kunkel said in a statement to The Associated Press the base is working with the Federal Aviation Administration to look into the matter.
