Cooper Now Has 2 Court Of Appeals Vacancies As Hunter Leaves
A veteran jurist on North Carolina's appeals courts is returning to private law practice with his age-mandated departure from the bench.
Court of Appeals Judge Bob Hunter's retirement is effective Monday. State judges must step down at the end of the month they turn 72.
Hunter is a Greensboro attorney elected to the intermediate appeals court in 2008. Gov. Pat McCrory appointed the fellow Republican to the Supreme Court in 2014, but Hunter lost his election bid. McCrory returned Hunter to the Court of Appeals, and he was elected there again in 2016.
Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper now has two Court of Appeals seats to fill. Cooper also gets to pick Judge Mark Davis' successor, since the governor named him to the Supreme Court.
Forced Congressional Election To Top $1.2M

The state elections board said Friday the 9th congressional district contest now headed toward a 10-candidate Republican primary contest in May could top $1.7 million if no candidate gets more than 30 percent of the vote.
US Judge: School's Rule For Girls To Wear Skirts Breaks Law
A federal judge says a North Carolina charter school promoting traditional values is engaging in unconstitutional sex discrimination by requiring girls to wear skirts.
U.S. District Judge Malcolm Howard ruled Thursday that Charter Day School can't enforce the skirts-only rule as part of its dress code since girls are clearly treated differently from boys.
The kindergarten through 8th grade school is in Leland, 10 miles west of Wilmington. The school is public and funded by taxpayers, but as a charter school can draw up some of its own rules.

Last Escapee From North Carolina Jail Captured
Authorities say the last of five inmates who escaped from a North Carolina jail last week has been captured.
The Nash County Sheriff's Office says that the inmate, 23-year-old Laquaris Rashad Battle of Castalia, was arrested early Sunday morning at a traffic stop in Hardeeville, South Carolina.
The sheriff's office says another passenger in the same vehicle was charged with cocaine possession.
The inmates escaped March 25 by making a hole in an exercise-yard fence. Four of the five inmates were captured within a day of the escape.
