Cooper Proposes Needing Big Majorities For Local LGBT Laws
Gov. Roy Cooper is floating a new compromise idea on repealing a law that limits protections for LGBT people.
Cooper said Sunday he'd support requiring large majority votes from city or town councils before they could adopt non-discrimination ordinances now banned by the law known as House Bill 2.
Cooper and gay-rights groups have criticized a proposal contained in new bipartisan legislation to change HB2 that would make it easy to condition such ordinances on local referendum votes.
HB2 Spurs NAACP Call For Boycott
An economic boycott by the NAACP is the latest fallout over North Carolina's so-called bathroom bill and other conservative policies.
The civil rights organization urged religious conferences, athletic events and musicians Friday to take their business elsewhere. During a news conference, they cited HB2 as well as ongoing legal fights over voting rights. The group stopped short of telling its members to cease all travel and spending in North Carolina — a component of previous boycotts -- but said it might add other economic measures later.
Protesters Target Winston-Salem Billboard
A crowd gathered in Winston-Salem Sunday to protest a controversial billboard. The message reads, “Real Men Provide, Real Women Appreciate It." Organizers called the sign on Business 40 demeaning, and used the event to create alternate slogans.
Organizers are raising money and will purchase a billboard of their own, displaying their favorite message from Sunday's event. The owner of the original sign, Whiteheart Outdoor Advertising, hasn't said who's behind it, saying the group that bought the space doesn't want to be identified.
North Carolina, New York: When Should Teen Be Tried As Adult
North Carolina and New York are the last states that still prosecute all 16- and 17-year-olds as adults in criminal court, but changes may be coming.
Both states are considering proposals to raise the age of criminal responsibility to 18.
Backers say the measures could save millions of dollars by providing rehabilitative services that young people need to keep from offending again. The proposal also would allow young offenders to avoid adult records that can affect their opportunities for housing, loans and higher education.
North Carolina is closer than ever to raising the age this year with first-time support from major law enforcement stakeholders.
NC Sheriff Backtracks, Called Protesters "Anti-American"
A North Carolina sheriff is backtracking from comments in his monthly newsletter accusing social progressives of being "anti-American."
Henderson County Sheriff Charles McDonald tells the Asheville Citizen-Times he's apologized to a local woman who said she is very patriotic and a progressive and was offended by his words.
McDonald says he doesn't agree with the social progressive movement, but supports their right to protest.
