GOP Field Of 10 In North Carolina Election Re-Do

Republicans are heading for a lively contest to decide who will represent the GOP in a new North Carolina congressional election mandated after a ballot-rigging scandal blocked the former Republican candidate's narrow November win.

Ten Republicans filed by Friday's deadline to run in the 9th Congressional District primary in May. Democrat Dan McCready drew no primary challenger.

The Republican candidates include Dan Bishop, the state senator who sponsored a 2016 state law limiting LGBT rights and the anointed choice of last year's GOP candidate.

Also filing was Raleigh attorney Chris Anglin, who was a registered Democrat until shortly before he entered last year's race for a state Supreme Court seat as a Republican.

Board: A Dozen UNC Campuses Don't Comply With Voter ID Law

Identification cards for students at a dozen University of North Carolina system schools have fallen short of qualifications set in state law so they can be used to comply with a new photo voter identification requirement next year.

The State Board of Elections announced late Friday which ID cards for universities, community colleges, American Indian tribes and government agencies meet security standards set in the law.

ID cards for students, employees or both at more than 70 such institutions were approved. But cards at 12 UNC campuses weren't approved, including those for students and employees at the system's flagship campus, UNC-Chapel Hill.

North Carolina County Declares Itself 'Gun Sanctuary'

Officials in North Carolina's westernmost county have voted to declare themselves a "gun sanctuary county."

The Cherokee Scout reports the Cherokee County Commissioners voted 3-2 to pass a three-page resolution that in part says the county will defy efforts by state or federal government to enforce strict gun-control laws.

The declaration, which passed last week, is considered mostly symbolic.

Commissioner C.B. McKinnon posted the entire resolution on his Facebook page. It reads in part that the county government will not authorize any of its resources for enforcing or assisting in the enforcement of laws "that infringe upon the rights of people to keep and bear arms."

Iconic North Carolina Barbecue Spot Closes Over Taxes Owed

A beloved North Carolina barbecue restaurant has closed over apparent tax problems.

Wilber's Barbecue in Goldsboro recently shut its doors, with a sign posted saying the property had been seized due to nonpayment of taxes.

WRAL-TV reports the Wayne County Clerk of Court said multiple tax liens had been filed against the restaurant, totaling more than $70,000 in tax liability.

State Department of Revenue spokesman Schorr Johnson said the owners can pay back taxes and regain control of the business.

Since opening in 1962, Wilber's has developed a reputation as an important stop for politicians, locals and barbecue-seeking tourists.

Wanted: Volunteers For Trash Cleanup Along NC Roads

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is looking for volunteers to clean up trash along roads during the Adopt-A-Highway Spring Litter Sweep next month.

The sweep is scheduled for April 13-17. It's one of two held annually; the other is in September.

DOT officials said in a news release that volunteers from local businesses, schools, non-profits, churches and community groups are among those who often help.
