It's Here: Business 40 Officially Shuts Down

A major highway in Winston-Salem closed this weekend.

The section of Business 40 between Peters Creek Parkway and U.S. 52 officially closed Saturday morning.

Travelers had already been experiencing partial interruptions on the highway that runs through the city's downtown due to other construction.

The initial section of the road is now more than 60 years old.

According to the City of Winston-Salem, several bridges over the highway are supposed to be in some phase of demolition by today, including Liberty, Main and Church streets.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is encouraging motorists to use the crowdsourced navigation app Waze to get real-time traffic updates during construction.

Midterm Elections Reveal Effects Of Gerrymandered Districts

The midterm elections have provided a case study on partisan gerrymandering that shows how the drawing of district boundaries can affect who's elected to Congress.

Earlier this year, courts in Pennsylvania and North Carolina declared their congressional districts to be unconstitutional partisan gerrymanders. Districts were re-drawn by a court in Pennsylvania, but not in North Carolina.

On Nov. 6, voters elected nine Democrats and nine Republicans under Pennsylvania's new map — a significant shift from the 13-5 GOP majority under the old map drawn by Republican.

In North Carolina, the congressional delegation retained a 10-3 Republican majority under a map drawn by Republicans. And that's despite an almost even split in the popular vote between Democrats and Republicans.

Officials Say Fire At North Carolina Mosque Not Intentional

Authorities in North Carolina say a recent fire at a mosque was not set intentionally.

Officials said Saturday that a preliminary investigation of a fire at the Islamic Center of Cary was accidental and there was evidence it was caused by electrical sources.

Firefighters were called to the center Friday morning. No one was injured in the blaze. The mosque is under construction and was expected to be complete in 2019.

No Injuries After Train Derailment In North Carolina

Crews are working to clean up a diesel spill after a train derailment in North Carolina.

WBTV-TV reports that a Norfolk Southern freight train derailed Sunday afternoon in Salisbury. There were no injuries reported.

Officials said three of the train's seven locomotives derailed. The cause was not immediately clear.

The derailment caused a diesel fuel leak that Norfolk Southern crews and contactors worked to clean up.
