People, Businesses In 3 More Counties Can Seek Florence Aid

Now residents and business owners in over one-third of North Carolina's counties can seek federal aid to cover uninsured or underinsured damage from Hurricane Florence last month.

Emergency officials say Guilford, Chatham and Durham counties have been added to the list of areas that can now seek individual disaster assistance, bringing the total to 34 of the 100 counties statewide. Grants and low-interest loans are possible.

People can apply online, by calling 1-800-621-3362 or by visiting a disaster recovery center located in some of the qualifying counties.

North Carolina Justices To Take Case On Court Of Appeals Number

North Carolina's highest court says it will hear arguments on whether the legislature can trim judgeships from the state's intermediate-level appeals court through attrition.

The state Supreme Court says it will take up litigation from Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper against Republican legislative leaders challenging a 2017 law reducing the Court of Appeals from 15 judges to 12 as retirements and other vacancies occur. The governor usually gets to name replacements, but that wouldn't happen with the next three openings. The majority on a trial court panel last spring upheld the law.

IBM Buying North Carolina-Based Red Hat In $34B Deal

IBM says it will acquire North Carolina-based open-source software company Red Hat in a $34 billion stock deal.

The technology and consulting company announced Sunday it would buy all Red Hat shares at $190 apiece — 63 percent above Red Hat's closing price Friday. The two companies said the deal is subject to Red Hat shareholder and regulatory approval and should be completed in the latter half of 2019.

IBM chief executive Ginni Rometty says the acquisition would make IBM the world's No. 1 hybrid cloud provider — that's when companies use a mix of on-site, private and third-party public cloud services.

The two companies said IBM intends to keep Red Hat's headquarters in Raleigh, where Red Hat has more than 2,000 employees. Red Hat has over 12,000 workers worldwide.

White Woman Fired Over Filmed Racist Rant At Black Neighbor

A white Charlotte woman filmed going on a racist rant at her black neighbor has been fired from her job.

The video shows Susan Westwood approaching sisters Leisa and Mary Garris this month and saying "I am white and hot. So what are you doing here?"

Charter Communications spokesman Patrick Paterno said Sunday that Westwood has been fired from her $125,000-per-year job referenced in the video.

An apparently drunk Westwood is heard asking where the sisters live, if they're visiting their "baby daddy" and if she needs to reveal her concealed weapon. The sisters ask Westwood to leave them alone as they're waiting for AAA. They eventually call 911.

Westwood has been issued criminal summons of communicating threats and simple assault. She wasn't reached for comment.

Honor Court Sanctions Student Who Threw Blood, Ink On Statue

An honor court at North Carolina's flagship public university directed a graduate student who poured red ink and her own blood on a Confederate monument on campus to perform community service and gave her a warning letter.

The five-student panel at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found Maya Little responsible for damage to the monument known as Silent Sam. Protesters toppled the statue of the soldier in August, four months after Little's action.

The News & Observer reports Friday's sanctions were less severe than what the student prosecutor recommended.
