Directive By Sheriffs To Hold Jailed For ICE Backed By House

North Carolina House Republicans have pushed through legislation requiring all county sheriffs to cooperate with federal immigration agents, particularly by complying with written requests to hold defendants.

The House voted 63-51 on Wednesday to force sheriffs to fulfill Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer requests. They give agents up to 48 hours to pick up suspects on the belief they are in the country unlawfully. The measure now goes to the Senate.

Republicans Back $400 In Supply Money For School Teachers

North Carolina Republicans want to provide $400 to each public school teacher to purchase construction paper, glue sticks and other classroom supplies through a new streamlined process that sidesteps local districts.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Mark Johnson and GOP education budget-writers unveiled legislation on Wednesday that would direct the money to more than 93,000 classroom teachers. They'll be debited for their purchases or reimbursed through an electronic app.

The money would come from $47 million in existing funds for supplies and equipment that now goes to local districts. Those districts would still receive about $10 million combined to spend as they see fit.

Bill Would Require That The Holocaust Be Taught In North Carolina

North Carolina lawmakers are considering legislation requiring that the Holocaust be taught in schools.

House Bill 437 would require the State Board of Education to include instruction of the Holocaust and genocide in English and Social Studies standards used in middle and high schools.

The News and Observer reports the bill is backed by the state House Education Committee, whose members agree that learning about the Holocaust is essential, especially now that remaining survivors are dying off.

Richard Schwartz, vice chairman of the N.C. Council on the Holocaust, told the committee the state needs to ensure “we live up to the mantra of ‘Never again,'” warning that “we're doomed to repeat history if we don't teach it.”

Twenty other states currently require teaching of the Holocaust.

Bill To Halt Treasurer's Employee Health Plan Changes OK'd

A special panel would recommend how to retool North Carolina's state employee health insurance plan — and prevent State Treasurer Dale Folwell from implementing pricing changes — in legislation now through one General Assembly chamber.

The House voted 75-36 on Wednesday to create the study and block Folwell from altering the current provider reimbursement system next year. Folwell says his new pricing scheme must be implemented to keep the State Health Plan from soon running out of cash.
