Veto Of North Carolina 'Born Alive' Upheld

North Carolina Republican leaders have failed to override Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper's veto of legislation that would have created a new crime against doctors and nurses who fail to care for an infant delivered during an unsuccessful abortion.

Enough Democrats sided with Cooper to defeat the override Wednesday by a vote of 67-53. An override required 72 votes. The Senate had voted to override in April.

Alcohol Sale Option At UNC Athletic Events Advances In Senate

Legislation giving all North Carolina public universities the option to sell beer and wine during campus athletic events continues to advance in the General Assembly.

The Senate's education committee agreed on Wednesday in a close vote to a House bill giving authority to trustee boards at University of North Carolina system campuses the option to sell alcoholic drinks at their stadiums and athletic facilities.

Bill supporters include the universities, which say controlling game-day consumption inside venues should lead to fewer alcohol-related problems coming from outside. Some committee members questioned promoting alcohol when binge drinking is a serious issue on campuses.

Fantasy Sports Regulations Falter In NC House Committee

Legislation to regulate fantasy sports games in North Carolina has been stopped again in the state House.

The House Judiciary Committee voted Wednesday against recommending a measure that would require state registration and fees by game operators, along with restrictions designed to discourage financial mischief.

The measure largely breezed through another House committee last month. It also contained the creation of a new state Gaming Commission that would consolidate oversight of the state lottery, bingo, raffles and boxing.

But the bill failed to advance Wednesday by a 12-16 vote. Some House members voting no said afterward the measure was too wide-ranging, or they didn't like language stating that fantasy sports don't meet the state's legal definition of gambling.

Feds To Test North Carolina Election Computers For Hacking

More than two years after a 2016 Election Day technical failure, federal computer sleuths will scour North Carolina polling equipment supplied by a company targeted by Russian military intelligence.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Wednesday that it will analyze laptops and replicated computer hard drives used in heavily Democratic Durham County to rule out hacking for malfunctions that forced officials to issue paper ballots and extend voting hours.

DHS is acting after North Carolina elections officials last week renewed their long-dormant request.

North Carolina Honors Veterans For 75th Anniversary Of D-Day

North Carolina will mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day with a ceremony and special meetings by the General Assembly at the old state Capitol.

Legislative leaders and foreign diplomats will honor World War II veterans attending the events on Thursday, as well as remember the 39 North Carolinians who died during the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944.

The formal midday ceremony will include a wreath-laying, followed by rifle salutes and other ceremonial military activities.

Earlier in the morning, there will be state House and Senate sessions at the 1840 Capitol building, where lawmakers will pass a resolution to honor the living and dead who participated in the Allied invasion of France.
