North Carolina Senate Releases Legislative District Rewrite

Map-makers are proposing new districts for members of the North Carolina Senate, a move forced after a federal court ruled Republicans illegally gave too much emphasis to race in the current version of legislative groupings.

Details of the state Senate map were released Monday. A statewide public hearing is scheduled Tuesday. State lawmakers are expected to finalize new House and Senate district lines the following week.

The Senate map matches the House proposal by drawing four new districts with no current lawmakers living in them and four districts potentially pitting two incumbents against each other.

Ex-Election Worker Charged With Altering 2016 Primary Votes

A former county elections administrator in North Carolina faces charges that he altered the number of votes cast during a primary election last year.

A Durham County grand jury on Monday indicted 59-year-old Richard Rawling of Cary for felony obstruction of justice and a misdemeanor charge of failure to discharge his official duties.

The Durham County elections board said last fall more than 1,000 provisional ballots were likely mishandled during the March 2016 primary election, but the miscount didn't affect the primary's outcome.

State elections board officials said Monday there was no evidence Rawling altered ballot counts to support a particular political party or candidate.

Mother Suspect In Fatal Stabbing Of Boy At UNC Chapel Hill

Authorities in North Carolina say they anticipate charging a 34-year-old woman with first-degree murder after a "domestic incident" on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's campus left her 5-year-old son dead.

Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall says that Ebony Oluwasegva will be charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, and possibly more charges. She's still hospitalized with injuries she suffered in the Sunday attack.

Her husband, 32-year-old Victor Oluwasegva, was injured in the incident but is expected to recover.

The violence occurred shortly after midnight in a single-family residence at the Baity Hill family housing community. Authorities said a knife was used as the weapon in the violence.

Jetblue Flight Makes Emergency Landing In North Carolina

JetBlue says one of its commercial jets made an emergency landing at a North Carolina airport due to mechanical issues.

The company released a statement saying a mechanical issue forced the flight from New York to Palm Beach, Florida, to land at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Monday morning.

Tracking service Flightaware identified the jet as an Airbus A320, which JetBlue notes on its website has about 160 seats. Flightaware says the plane landed at 9:15 a.m.

Wake County EMS spokesman Jeffrey Hammerstein said six people were evaluated at the scene by medics, and two others were taken to a hospital.

Visitors Take Home Winnings From North Carolina Lottery

Two people visiting North Carolina went back to their respective homes with a lot more cash in their pockets thanks to the lottery.

Annie Wilson of Greenville, South Carolina, parlayed a trip to visit her daughter-in-law in Laurinburg into a $112,019 Cash 5 win. She chose her numbers using a combination of family birthdays.

Wilson claimed her prize on Monday at North Carolina Education Lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, Wilson took home $77,854, which she said she plans to save.
