Panthers Name Tina Becker COO, She Now Runs Daily Operation

The Panthers have announced Tina Becker has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer with full control of the day-to-day management of the organization.

The move comes after the NFL launched an investigation into alleged sexual and racist misconduct by longtime owner Jerry Richardson. The 81-year-old is stepping away from the daily operation and will focus on the pending sale of the franchise.

Team president Danny Morrison had resigned earlier in the year, and there was no COO before, or after, his resignation.

Becker has served in a variety of roles during her career with the Panthers, including directing the organization's business and administrative priorities, as well as dealing with league affairs.

Former UNC Civil Rights Center Attorneys Set Up New Practice

Attorneys who previously worked for a civil rights center at the University of North Carolina have set up a separate law practice named for the man whose work inspired the center's creation.

The Herald-Sun of Durham reports that Mark Dorosin and Elizabeth Haddix have opened the Julius L. Chambers Center for Civil Rights. They have acquired the former caseload of the UNC Center for Civil Rights now that UNC system policy prevents that center from litigating cases.

Chambers was a civil rights attorney and the first director of the UNC center, which helped the poor and disenfranchised.

Haddix and Dorosin plan to establish the Chambers Center as a nonprofit. In the future, they could decide to affiliate with another university law school or with a state or national advocacy group.

Campbell Soup To Buy Charlotte-Based Snyder's-Lance

Campbell Soup will spend $4.87 billion in cash for Snyder's-Lance, gorging on a snack market that has grown increasingly competitive.

The soup maker said Monday that the acquisition will allow it to expand its distribution channels in the crowded field.

Campbell Soup Co., based in Camden, New Jersey, is paying $50 per share, a 6.8 percent premium to Snyder's-Lance's closing price Friday.

Snyder's-Lance, based in Charlotte, makes pretzels and chips. Its most well-known brands include Snyder's of Hanover, Kettle Brand and Pop Secret. It will join the Campbell's division that makes Pepperidge Farm and Goldfish crackers.

Triad International Airport May Receive New Name

An international airport in the Triad may receive a new name as part of a bid to advance its position.

The News & Record reports Piedmont Triad Partnership economic development agency co-chair Nido Qubein said Monday that community leaders have been discussing a name change for the Piedmont Triad International Airport near Greensboro for months.

Qubein, who is also president of High Point University, declined to share possibilities for a new name, and the chairman of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority, Steve Showfety, wouldn't say whether the airport would change its name.

The possibility of a name change comes as the airport prepares to create a master plan for revamping the terminal, as part of a broader initiative to remain competitive that Showfety calls "renew, refresh and refocus."

Winston-Salem Neighborhood Cell Tower Approved

The Winston-Salem city council has OK'd a cell tower near a residential neighborhood despite the objections of residents.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports the council approved placing the tower on a church property in the Ardmore neighborhood on a vote of 6-2.

The tower would be what is known as a slick stick, appearing as a bare pole standing 150 feet tall.

An attorney for Communications Tower Group LLC argued that studies show the cell tower would have no effect on property values.

Opponents disagreed with that assessment, and claimed the tower would not legally be in harmony with the neighborhood.

Council members appeared sympathetic, but said they were bound by state and federal regulations governing such towers.
