Voter: Lawsuit Tries 'To Unrig A Rigged Process'
A Democratic voter has testified that a gerrymandering lawsuit against North Carolina lawmakers is "trying to unrig a rigged process."
The first day of the partisan gerrymandering trial concluded Monday with Derrick Miller of Wilmington taking the stand. Miller is one of the plaintiffs.
Also, four former North Carolina governors released a statement supporting the lawsuit.
Former Democratic Govs. Jim Hunt, Mike Easley and Beverly Perdue and Republican ex-Gov. Jim Martin blamed partisan gerrymandering for breaking the system of checks and balances no matter which party controls the majority.
Sports, Horse Betting Bill For Cherokee Gets Final OK
North Carolina's only federally recognized American Indian tribe could soon offer sports and horse wagering to patrons at its two casinos.
The General Assembly gave final approval Monday night to a measure that would give the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians the authority to offer the additional betting. The House voted for the measure that had already cleared the Senate three months ago.
The bill now goes to Gov. Roy Cooper's desk. A Cooper spokesman says the bill will be reviewed before he makes a decision on whether to sign it.
North Carolina School Superintendent Suspended With Pay
North Carolina's second-largest school system has suspended its superintendent with pay but without saying why.
A statement from Charlotte-Mecklenburg School on Monday confirmed that Superintendent Clayton Wilcox was suspended, but the statement didn't say when it happened and it provided no additional details.
Wilcox has been on the job for two years.
State Climate Change Interagency Council Heads To Winston-Salem
A group tasked with fighting climate change is meeting in Winston-Salem this week. It's part of the state's plan to reduce greenhouse gases by 40 percent before 2025.
Gov. Roy Cooper signed an executive order last fall, directing state agencies to create specific plans for meeting those goals.
The order also established what's called the North Carolina Climate Change Interagency Council. It allows key stakeholders to interact and work together during the process. Their meeting in Winston-Salem will provide an opportunity for the public to comment on the various proposals.
The meeting will take place at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Wise Man Brewing Makes Top Ten List
Winston-Salem-based Wise Man Brewing has been named a Top Ten brewery at the U.S. Open Beer Championship. The company's offerings stood out against a field of 7,000 beer submissions from hundreds of breweries worldwide. Wise Man shared the tenth spot with two other breweries.
Wise Man is a microbrewery, producing less than 50 barrels a week, but since opening its doors in 2017, the small business has made a big splash. This year, four of the eight beers submitted won awards in the global competition. And for the second straight year, Wise Man's Bourbon Barrel-Aged breakfast stout, “Merry World” received a Gold Medal.
