Elections Board Delays Voting Machine Certification
The North Carolina Board of Elections has delayed certifying new voting machines for the 2020 elections.
The News and Observer reports officials cited lingering concerns over election hacking as a reason for the delay.
The bi-partisan vote means a decision on certifying new voting machines won't be made until at least mid-August.
Some board members want to see language added to the state's rules ensuring that any voting machines in North Carolina need to include paper balloting, as opposed to machines that rely on barcode printouts.
Officials: More Than 20 Cars Vandalized In Airport Lot
Officials at Piedmont Triad International Airport say more than 20 cars have been vandalized in the long-term parking lot.
A statement from PTI on Monday says the vandalism occurred early Sunday in the first five rows of the south long-term parking lot across the street from the Marriott hotel.
The statement says some of the cars involved had windows broken, while others were spray painted. The damage was discovered by an airport employee, and airport and Greensboro police are investigating.
Greensboro Gets Phone App For Crime-Solving Tips
Greensboro is launching a mobile phone app to make it easier for people to submit photos and videos along with anonymous crime-solving tips.
The Greensboro Police Department announced Monday that Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers is adding the phone app to its other means of receiving tips. The other ways include phone calls, text messages and the Internet.
The new phone app will still allow tipsters to remain anonymous and will use encryption to protect the identities of people submitting information.
Gun Shop Buys '4 Horsemen' Billboard Insulting Congresswomen
A new billboard in North Carolina shows four minority congresswomen smiling down on the small town of Murphy, their faces at odds with the apocalyptic phrase slapped above them: The 4 Horsemen Cometh.
The billboard funded by a local gun shop then shows a red line striking out the last word, editing the phrase to instead say "The 4 Horsemen are Idiots." The Charlotte Observer reports the billboard by Cherokee Guns targets the same congresswomen who President Donald Trump recently told to return to the "crime infested places from which they came."
Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib are all U.S. citizens, and only one emigrated from another country.
The billboard is signed "the Deplorables," and has sparked sharp reactions online, both supportive and appalled.
After Tinariwen Comments, Free Concert Aims To Celebrate Diversity
The Ramkat in Winston-Salem is hosting a free concert in conjunction with the National Black Theatre Festival. It comes as a response to hateful comments that were made on the venue's Facebook page.
Nashville-based soul band The War And Treaty were scheduled to play a ticketed concert at Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex. Now, the show has been moved to The Ramkat and will be free to the public.
Just over a week ago, the venue found themselves embroiled in an unfortunate situation on social media. Racist and threatening comments were made under an ad announcing the North African band Tinariwen's upcoming show at the club.
Since the concert is now free, any previous ticket sales to see The War and Treaty can be refunded at their points of purchase.
