Truliant Files Trademark Suit Against BB&T/SunTrust Over New Name

A Winston-Salem-based credit union is filing a trademark lawsuit against BB&T and SunTrust over their proposed new name.

Truliant Federal Credit Union is suing to protect its brand after BB&T and SunTrust announced that the name for their merger would be Truist Financial Corporation.

The case was filed in a federal court this week.

In a written statement Truliant says its name is a federally registered trademark that's been in use for 20 years.

President Todd Hall says this is an infringement on Truliant's brand and will confuse customers as the two entities' business regions overlap.

Child Death Hike Halts Hospital's Complex Heart Surgeries

Complex pediatric heart surgeries will not be performed at North Carolina Children's Hospital because of an increase in patient deaths.

The News & Observer quotes hospital officials as saying heart surgeons won't do complicated procedures until an outside group can review its practices.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services launched an investigation into the Chapel Hill facility after a New York Times report published last month. The article included audio recordings in which cardiologists were alarmed at the number of child deaths.

Republican Lawmakers Push Back On Redistricting Allegations

Attorneys for North Carolina Republican lawmakers are pushing back hard in state court over accusations the legislators misled federal judges in an earlier redistricting lawsuit.

Republican legislative leaders filed in court on Monday a response to a motion filed this month by attorneys for Common Cause, the state Democratic Party and Democratic voters now suing in a separate partisan legislative redistricting case.

At issue are documents the plaintiffs subpoenaed from records of the late GOP mapmaker Thomas Hofeller. Plaintiffs' lawyers have alleged some of Hofeller's computer files will show Republican legislators deceived federal judges about whether they could redraw new House and Senate lines for the 2017 elections.

The legislators wrote the plaintiffs have no such evidence and that their lawyers should be investigated for how those documents were obtained.

North Carolina Senate Passes Bill Expanding Hemp Industry

Legislation designed to further develop North Carolina's fast-growing hemp industry, increase agritourism and make it easier for industrial-scale hog farms to overhaul their open-air waste storage systems has cleared the state Senate.

The legislature's annual "Farm Act" passed on Monday after floor debate by a 31-14 vote. It now goes to the House.

North Carolina State Rep. Rena Turner To Resign Next Week

A North Carolina House member has announced she's resigning next week, as the General Assembly continues working toward completing this year's legislative session.

Republican Rep. Rena Turner of Iredell County wrote to Gov. Roy Cooper and House Speaker Tim Moore on Monday telling them that she would step down from her 84th House District seat on June 27.

The 68-year-old Turner cited family considerations in her decision to leave the seat she's held since 2013. The former Clerk of Superior Court says she wants to spend more time with her family and grandchildren as they all spread out geographically.

Shark Bites Child In Third North Carolina Attack This Season

North Carolina officials say a shark bit an 8-year-old boy in what is now the third attack this season along the North Carolina coast.

The boy was swimming in open water Sunday afternoon when a shark grabbed him by the leg, causing multiple bite wounds.

WECT reports the child was transported on a ferry to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

The boy is the third person to be attacked by a shark in the state this month. Last week, a 19-year-old was bitten by a shark in Ocean Isle, about 100 miles down the same coastline from where a 17-year-old girl lost most of her leg to a shark attack at Fort Macon State Park earlier this month.
