New US House Election In NC To Be Held On Sept. 10

North Carolina's elections board has set a Sept. 10 date to fill a congressional seat still vacant after November's result was tainted by ballot-fraud concerns.

The state board on Monday chose the date for the new election in the 9th congressional district race.

Political parties will hold their primary elections on May 14.

6 File On First Day Of Filing For Election To Succeed Jones

Two sitting state legislators and a top state Republican Party leader are among six candidates who have quickly filed to try to succeed the late U.S. Rep. Walter Jones Jr.

The State Board of Elections received paperwork from a half-dozen candidates on Monday's first day of filing for the 3rd Congressional District seat.

Republican hopefuls are state Reps. Greg Murphy of Greenville and Michael Speciale of New Bern, GOP Vice Chairwoman Michele Nix of Kinston and previous district candidate Phil Law of Jacksonville. Nix has resigned from her party post.

Democrats filing Monday were Ike Johnson of Jacksonville and Dana Outlaw of New Bern.

Missing Winston-Salem Mother Identified As Victim In Fatal Crash

Police have confirmed that a missing Winston-Salem mother of two was found dead in her vehicle Monday afternoon.

According to a news release, troopers discovered a wrecked vehicle in a stream in Kernersville.

The body of 30-year-old Kristen Leigh McNeal was found in the car. McNeal had not been seen since February 17th, and was the subject of an intensive search.

Officials with the Highway Patrol said they believe the crash happened several days ago.

An autopsy on McNeal's body will be performed by the North Carolina Medical Examiner's office.

US Judge, Lawyers Sorry For 1980s Confederate Flag Photos

A federal judge and two lawyers in North Carolina have apologized for posing with Confederate flags in college yearbook photos in the 1980s.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports U.S. District Court Judge Frank Whitney appeared in a 1982 Wake Forest University yearbook photo with the Kappa Alpha fraternity in front of the Confederate flag, while Murray C. "Tripp" Greason III and J. McLain Wallace Jr. appeared in a 1984 Confederate flag photo with the same fraternity.

All three expressed regret about the photos.

Co-Chairs Announced For National Black Theater Festival

An actress best known for her role in "The Color Purple" and an actor who has portrayed singer Jackie Wilson are the co-chairs of an upcoming North Carolina festival.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports Margaret Avery and Chester Gregory were introduced on Monday as the co-chairs of the 2019 National Black Theatre Festival.

Avery played the character Shug in the "The Color Purple," and most recently played Helen Patterson on the BET show "Being Mary Jane."

Gregory impressed festival audiences and critics in 2001 with his portrayal in the title role of "The Jackie Wilson Story: My Heart Is Crying, Crying."

The 15th biennial event is scheduled for July 29 through Aug. 3 by the North Carolina Black Repertory Co. in venues across Winston-Salem. It began in 1989.
