Homeless Assault Victim Found Dead In Winston-Salem

A Winston-Salem homeless man who was severely beaten by teenagers in January was found dead on Monday morning.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports Bill Bloxham's body was found in the restroom of a Hardee's restaurant on First St. shortly before 10 a.m.

A police spokesman says that while there were no immediate signs of foul play, an investigation is underway.

Bloxham was beaten by five teenagers on January 16th. The attack left him with a brain injury and near blindness in one eye, among other injuries.

Two of the teens have pleaded guilty and been sentenced to prison terms, while the others await trials.

Bloxham was 60 years old.

Jury Finds Gupton Guilty Of First-Degree Murder

A man accused in a brutal hotel slaying in Greensboro has been found guilty of first-degree murder, and now faces the death penalty.

The News and Record reports that after more than three days of deliberations, the jury found 29-year-old Gary Gupton guilty in the death of 46-year-old Stephen White.

Gupton was also found guilty of first-degree arson for setting a room on fire at the Battleground Inn, the culmination of a violent attack on White.

Gupton said he met White at a gay bar, and attacked him at the hotel following a sexual encounter.

Jurors will next hear testimony and evidence as they decide whether Gupton should face the death penalty.

Additional Early Voting Sites Open In Guilford County

Six additional early voting sites are now open for municipal races in Guilford County. They're located at the Agricultural Center, Bur-Mil Park, and at four recreational centers: Brown, Craft, Leonard, and Deep River.

The News and Record reports that the Guilford County Old Courthouse in Greensboro, and Washington Terrace Park in High Point, will continue operating normally from 8-5.

This year, Election Day will run from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 7th, with voters going to their assigned precincts.

Same-day registration will be available during the early voting period, but not on Election Day itself.

Republicans Object To Special Master In NC Remap

Republican legislative leaders in North Carolina oppose a plan by federal judges to hire an outside expert to help them examine and possibly redraw General Assembly district lines. The districts were previously retooled this year after court rulings.

Attorneys for GOP lawmakers objected Monday to the judicial panel announcing its intention last week to appoint a Stanford University law school professor as what's called a "special master." The lawyers write in a brief it's too early in the process to hire a special master and have questions about whether the professor can impartially assess the districts.

Third Employee Dies In Attempted NC Prison Escape

Officials say a North Carolina correctional officer has died from injuries she suffered during a deadly inmate escape attempt.

Forty-nine-year-old Correctional officer Wendy Shannon died Monday and is the third person killed in the Oct. 12 incident at Pasquotank Correctional Institution.

Shannon had worked as a correctional officer at Pasquotank since 2013.

Thirty-five-year-old Correctional officer Justin Smith and 50-year-old Correction Enterprises manager Veronica Darden were killed and eight other prison workers were injured in the incident. Four inmates face murder charges.
