Cooper Talks Climate Change On Capitol Hill

Gov. Roy Cooper is speaking to members of Congress to urge the federal government to take action on curbing greenhouse emissions and prepare for the effects of climate change.

Cooper will testify Wednesday before the House Committee on Natural Resources on Capitol Hill. Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker and other climate change researchers and activists also are slated to speak.

Before his trip to Washington, Cooper told reporters he'll tell House members about global warming concerns after two recent historic storms in hurricanes Matthew and Florence striking the state. He's also unhappy with President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

Cooper signed an executive order last fall setting a goal to cut greenhouse gases by 40 percent before 2025, compared to 2005.

North Carolina County Jail To Stop Housing ICE Detainees

A North Carolina county's jail will stop accepting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees when its contract with the federal government ends.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Jr. announced Tuesday that the county jail won't allow ICE to house detainees for civil violations of federal immigration law, saying the sheriff's office "never will be an extension" of immigration services.

The contract with the U.S. Marshals Service that allows ICE to use the jail ends April 30. Kimbrough says U.S. Marshals can continue to keep their fugitives in the jail.

GOP Lawmakers Want Civil Rights Panel Appointment Withdrawn

North Carolina Republican lawmakers want Gov. Roy Cooper to withdraw his recent appointee to a state civil rights panel because of a past social media post comparing law enforcement officers to terrorists.

Senate leader Phil Berger says all 29 GOP senators wrote Cooper on Tuesday asking him to take back last month's appointment of Charlotte city councilwoman LaWana Mayfield to the state Human Relations Commission.

They cited her tweet last March, when she wrote being black in the U.S. under President Donald Trump "has created homegrown terrorist (sic) wearing blue uniforms." She refused to step back from the comment when critics called for her council resignation.

The senators wrote Mayfield's appointment raises questions about the Cooper administration's stance toward police.

Honda Aircraft Fined $45K For Citizenship Job Requirements

The U.S. Justice Department says the maker of HondaJet aircraft violated immigration laws by refusing to consider certain non-U.S. citizens for jobs despite their legal right to work in the country.

Honda Aircraft Co. said Tuesday it has changed policies and procedures to ensure job postings comply with both anti-discrimination laws and trade restrictions affecting industries with potential military uses.

The Justice Department said last week the Greensboro company published at least 25 job postings between 2015 and 2016 that illegally required a citizenship status that ruled out refugees and others. The government says Honda Aircraft misunderstood requirements for its employees.

The company agreed to remove specific citizenship requirements from job postings, unless permitted by law. It's paying nearly $45,000 and requiring training on anti-discrimination provisions for some employees.

Officials: Approximately 30 Taken Into Custody In ICE Raid

Authorities say approximately 30 people have been taken into custody after a raid by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at a North Carolina manufacturing plant.

A statement from the Lee County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday said the raid on the plant in Sanford was the result of an ongoing investigation into identity theft and fraud. The statement said the sheriff's office assisted ICE agents at the request of federal officials.

The statement didn't identify the plant, adding that it is unclear if the plant is at fault.

The sheriff's office said the raid was not a random operation.
