The snow has started to fall across the Triad and much of North Carolina, and it's bringing cold temperatures and potentially hazardous road conditions with it.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for most of the state for Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon. A winter storm watch is in effect in a few areas.
Forecasters expect anywhere from four to eight inches of precipitation Friday night in Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Durham and Raleigh, with more to follow on Saturday.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Keith Sherburn says people need to take extra care this weekend, since temperatures could hit the teens or even single digits.
"Even once the snow is out of here, there's obviously going to be some travel impact associated with that, but also concerns with the very cold conditions that could lead to some potentially life threatening situations," says Sherburn.
Governor Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency for all of the state's 100 counties ahead of the storm.
Utilities are making plans to deal with power outages. No problems were reported early Friday.
Transportation department officials are spreading salt and sand on many roads.
