New affordable housing complex in Greensboro aims to support those who face housing insecurity

A new affordable apartment complex is coming to southwest Greensboro and aims to provide a home and services for those who face housing insecurity.

Oakwood Park is a two-story development coming to West Vandalia Road. Rent for the 16-unit building will be aimed at households making at or below 50% of area median income, or around $35,000 for a family of three.

The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency recently awarded Greensboro's Affordable Housing Management, Inc., or AHM, $2.6 million to develop the project. AHM Former Executive Director and current Assistant Secretary David Levy says it's part of an effort to address a dire need.

"There are not a lot of permanent housing options for homeless or former homeless households," he says. "This really does meet a critical city need of providing permanent supportive housing."

AHM will partner with Greensboro Urban Ministry for applicant referrals and casework for future residents.

Levy says the development is one part of the organization's three-phase project that could bring a total of 184 affordable housing units to Greensboro.

Construction for Oakwood Park will begin this summer and is expected to be completed in one year.
