Highway planners are looking for a new name for one of the busiest roadways in the Triad.

A four-year project to transform Business 40 is scheduled to begin next summer, and its old name will likely be left behind, along with its famously short on-ramps and crumbling bridges.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports that the name of the highway has been known to confuse drivers, who sometimes mistake it for Interstate 40.

Now planners are seeking public input for a post-makeover moniker. Almost anything goes, but it can't be named for a person – organizers say that can become too political.

Suggestions will be taken through January. If you have an idea, you can submit it at www.business40nc.com

The project will include new and revamped bridgesand entranceways. A pedestrian strollway will also parallel the highway. To get the work done, what is now callled Business 40 will be shut down for about two years, with traffic re-routed to U.S. 52, Silas Creek Parkway and Interstate 40.
