New Orleans Police: Bourbon Street Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 9 Injured

New Orleans police are investigating a deadly shooting that took place in the early hours of Sunday morning, when shots rang out in the heart of the city's famous French Quarter.

Ten victims, ranging in ages 20 to 37 years old, were injured from shotgun wounds, including one who has died from his injuries.

The New Orleans Police Department responded to the scene when they received a call just before 1:30 a.m., they said in a statement, many of whom were patrolling the area at the time of the incident. Police pinpoint the scene around the 100 block of Bourbon Street, near the intersection of Bourbon Street and Orleans Avenue.

Visitors are flocking to the tourist destination over the weekend to take part in festivities surrounding the Bayou Classic, a college football rivalry game between the Grambling State University Tigers and the Southern University Jaguars, which historically turns into a drawn-out, citywide event.

Nine victims were taken for treatment at a nearby hospital. Police later learned that a tenth injured victim from the scene made it to a hospital, separately. One of the victims, identified as a male, died at the hospital as a result of his injuries. Eight of the victims are males, including the deceased victim, and two victims are females.

Police don't yet know what motivated the shooting, but in an early morning press briefing, Chief Michael Harrison says officers arrested two males at the scene for illegally carrying firearms.

One of the arrested individuals, was one of the victims who is being treated for his injuries. The second male who was arrested "may or may not be affiliated with this event," Harrison says.
