A proposed new district in High Point that would include residential and commercial properties aims to revitalize the city's historical industrial corridor.

The goal for the Southwest Mill District is to create a more walkable and better-connected area along the West Green Drive corridor. The city is working with the Southwest Renewal Foundation and Dover, Kohl & Partners for the plan.

The proposal would include a text amendment for a new zoning district.

Margaret Flippen is one of the planners on the project. She said at a public meeting Tuesday the district would focus on encouraging a mix of structures in the area.

"Still building upon that long history of industry in High Point, not doing away with it, but definitely changing it to be cleaner and more acceptable in an area that has a variety of uses and opportunities," Flippen said.

She said the Southwest Heritage Greenway project that is underway could also be looked at as an economic driver for the district.

The Planning and Zoning Commission is expected to hold a public hearing on the proposal in February.
