The Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation has been awarded $100,000 from The Duke Endowment to take part in the Healthy People, Healthy Carolinas initiative, which is designed to bring a proactive approach to health care and education.

The funding will help support the work of Healthy Forsyth, a coalition of community organizations working to address chronic health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Officials say The Duke Endowment grant is a crucial first step to strengthen the infrastructure of participating groups as they develop best practices for the future.

Healthy Forsyth will join 10 other existing coalitions in the statewide effort to widen and diversify health care. It will initially focus on traditionally underserved areas of Winston-Salem.

According to a news release, North Carolina ranks 31st among all states when it comes to the overall health of residents.
