Most speech pathologists agree: by 12 months old, babies should be saying their first words. When that milestone doesn’t come, parents are left with questions—How? When? And sometimes, if—those first words will ever arrive.

"I didn’t start speaking till I was 4," Radio 101 reporter Khloey Key says. She asks her mom what she remembers about her early years.

Her mom, Naquetti Swinney-Key, says as soon as she noticed Khloey struggling to express herself, she knew she needed to evaluate her daughter's speech delay. Though she wrestled with how best to proceed, she trusted her gut to get help and is thankful she did.

Swinney-Key says that with interventions, Khloey has learned to become a stronger communicator who can advocate for herself.
