Police And Protesters Clash In Charlotte For 2nd Night After Shooting

On Wednesday, for a second straight evening, demonstrators in Charlotte, N.C., protested the fatal shooting of a black man by police. Clashes broke out and officers in riot gear tried to disperse the protesters with tear gas.

The demonstrators were protesting the death of Keith Lamont Scott. Member station WFAE reports, two different narratives of Scott's shooting emerged on Wednesday, with police saying Scott emerged from his vehicle with a gun against officers' orders. Neighbors and relatives said Scott was holding a book. Footage of the shooting captured by an officer's body camera is being reviewed, authorities say.

The shooting led to protests in the city Tuesday night that blocked I-85, and resulted in damaged police cars and 16 injured officers.

As Wednesday's protest went on, city officials said a civilian had been shot and killed by another civilian. Later officials said the injured man had not died, but was on life support.

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory has declared a state of emergency in Charlotte, and says state police have been assisting the city.
