A plurality of North Carolinians favors the beginning of impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, according to a new poll from Meredith College.
Just under half — 48.2 percent — of those polled say Trump should face an inquiry. Forty-one percent said he should not.
The poll also found that Trump's overall approval rating had slipped about four percent since the spring, and among Republicans, it had dropped 10 percent.
David McLennan is the poll director at Meredith. He says the impeachment discussion has had an impact on the results.
“President Trump has had very consistent approval ratings in North Carolina, but this is a different situation, and I think his numbers reflect that,” he says.
The week-long poll had almost wrapped up by the time Trump made his controversial decision to remove U.S. troops from Syria. McLennan says that issue likely did not affect the poll's numbers.
The poll also found about an equal split among support for Democrats and Republicans for Congress, but because of districts drawn along partisan lines, McLennan says the GOP will likely continue to dominate in voting.
Only one Congressional race — the 9th District, which just went through a special election — is likely to be competitive in 2020, he says.
