The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is making it easier for Triad motorists to acquire a new license.
This fall, federal agencies will begin enforcing the REAL ID Act. It requires either the new card, a U.S. passport, or another form of federally approved identification in order to board commercial flights and enter secure federal buildings.
The North Carolina REAL ID driver's license looks much like the old one, but it has a star on the top. Obtaining the ID for the first time can only be done in-person at a driver license office. Early on, the process was marred by long lines and extended wait times. New initiatives to streamline it have helped: encouraging appointment setting, monitoring clerks for processing efficiency, and now REAL ID Express Days.
The DMV is hosting 10 of the days on weekends through May at select driver license offices across the state. For Triad-area motorists, both dates take place in Kernersville. The first is this Saturday, with another scheduled for April 4.
