A local nonprofit group has announced a rehabilitation project that will help maintain low-cost housing in Greensboro.
Affordable Housing Management Incorporated will oversee the Southwoods development. It was first built in 1997 with funding from the city and consists of nearly 60 studio homes.
Cynthia Blue, assistant director of the city's Housing and Neighborhood Development department, says these units are important entry points for housing.
"Preservation of affordable housing is just as important as production of new units in terms of keeping these units available and affordable for our low-income populations," says Blue.
The city has allocated more than $2 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds for the project.
Rent for the apartments will be $485 a month. Units will be limited to residents who make less than 50% of the area median income.
The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2024.
