Remembering The Legendary Stanley 'Buckwheat' Dural Jr.

In October 2014, World Cafe ventured to Lafayette, La., with a camera crew under the direction of filmmaker Robert Mugge, who would turn the trip into the documentary Zydeco Crossroads.

The documentary captures the state of the Creole music scene in and around Lafayette through a series of live performances and interviews I did with some of the great musicians of zydeco, including C.J. Chenier, Chubby Carrier, Nathan Williams, Rockin' Dopsie Jr., Creole United and others.

Our trip to Lafayette wouldn't have been complete without an session with the legendary Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural Jr., who set up with his band, Buckwheat Zydeco, at El Sido's Zydeco & Blues Club. Owned by Sid Williams, El Sido's has been the epicenter of zydeco music for more than 30 years, and Williams' longtime friend Dural regularly played there.

Saddened to hear about Dural's passing — he died Saturday at age 68 — we wanted to share this clip from Zydeco Crossroads. It includes an interview that's a loving expression of Williams and Dural's relationship, along with a performance from Buckwheat Zydeco. Rest in peace, Buckwheat.
