Rep. Conrad To Leave NCGA Before End Of Term

State Rep. Debra Conrad is leaving the legislature before the end of her term.

Conrad, a Republican, has had a long political career. She's currently serving her fourth term in the legislature after nearly two decades in county government.

She announced last year that she would not seek re-election in 2020. 

The Winston-Salem Journal reports that the veteran lawmaker will not complete her current term. In a letter to House leadership, Conrad says she's leaving at the end of the business day Friday.

Conrad represents the 74th district, which had been reliably Republican but is expected to be more competitive this year as a result of redistricting. Jeff Zenger is the GOP candidate, and Dan Besse is the Democrat on the November ballot to take over the seat.

Next month, Republicans will pick a replacement to serve out the remainder of Conrad's unexpired term.
