It’s that time of year again. When earnest, well-intentioned Americans resolve to lose weight, or to exercise, or maybe to clean out a closet or embark on a new career. But what does it actually take to follow through – not just for a few weeks, but to make those changes permanent?

Well, Mark Washburne has a thing or two to say about perseverance. He decided to go for a daily run on December 31, 1989 and has not missed a single day since. To be clear, that’s 9,496 days, and counting. His runs have taken place in inclement weather, through injuries, and in one case, within an hour after being released from the hospital.

Washburne joins Here & Now‘s Peter O’Dowd to discuss the nature of streak running, and the mindset necessary to succeed, regardless of the goal.
