The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education has repealed a controversial plan to allow students to carry pepper sprays and disposable razors on campus. The policy brought some unintended national attention to the school system.

The board had approved the use of items such as pepper spray and mace earlier in May, citing the need to protect students.

Board of Education Chairman Josh Wagner says several liability issues came up after that vote was taken.

But an offhand comment thrust an unwanted spotlight on the policy. One board member had referenced House Bill 2, saying the use of pepper spray could help female students wary of who follows them into bathrooms.

The board said in a statement that comment was taken out of context, and the issue never played a role in adopting the policy.

The rule allowing the use of defensive sprays was repealed on Monday.
