Single-family home construction on the rise in Forsyth County, report says

Single-family home construction is on the rise in Forsyth County, according to a report presented at Thursday's board of commissioners meeting. 

The county issued nearly 1,600 construction permits for new single-family homes in 2024. That’s about 50 percent more than the previous year. 

“We issued the most single-family permits last year than we have over that five-year rolling period of time," says Forsyth County Planning Director Chris Murphy. 

Murphy says multi-family residential unit construction is a different story, though. The number of new permits for this type of building fell to a five-year low, according to his presentation. 

The report also included a map that identified areas he says have the most potential for future growth. 

“And the biggest one of those is there along the beltway between Rural Hall and Walkertown,” he says. 

Murphy says his department is also exploring what he called “underutilized” economic development opportunities in the county’s eastern regions.
