A sinkhole that has developed around a water main break has forced a temporary closure of the Salem Creek Greenway in Winston-Salem.

City officials say the break has not yet been fixed as crews search for a cause, but the pipe has been isolated and is not spewing water. They also say there is no sewer overflow, and the break does not pose a threat to the quality of the creek’s water.

The closure runs from Vargrave Street to Research Parkway and includes a stretch where a train trestle spans overhead.

The greenway is popular among joggers, walkers and cyclists, connecting the Washington Park area with The Quarry at Grant Park and Salem Lake.

City officials say a timeline to re-open the greenway has not been determined.
