The state Department of Health and Human Services is seeking comment from North Carolina residents on proposed changes to its Child and Adult Care Food Program.

The change in question comes in the form of a proposed waiver which could affect how and when kids get access to at-risk after school meals.

Because the program is federally funded, it must follow United States Department of Agriculture procedures when serving food. According to those guidelines, meals must be served at specific times and locations, mainly after class and in a setting with other people.

The proposed change would allow requirements to be bypassed in the event of emergency or other disruptions. With the waiver, these meals could be available for pick up and eaten anywhere, not just pre-approved locations.

State residents have until Sept. 13 to review the proposed waiver and give their thoughts on the matter.

To submit public comment, residents can email cacfptraining@dhhs.nc.gov, fax the program manager at 919-870-4819 or send a letter to the state's Communities Nutrition Services Section to 1914 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699.

More information on the Child and Adult Care Food Program can be found on the Department of Health and Human Services website.
