Maintenance crews at the Piedmont Triad International Airport are busy keeping the runways clear of sleet and ice.
“Most of the winter weather situations have not been chemical using events but it's been snow plowing and we are using a lot of salt brine, so we are hanging in there,” says Kevin Baker, the executive director of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority.
He says travelers should expect delays and cancellations.
“We are pretty much open all of the time and manage to keep our airport clear even in big events, but a lot of the Northeastern airports are socked in right now and have a lot of cancellations. Folks should check with their airlines to see about cancellations especially if they are flying into Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Baltimore or other Northeastern airports.”
Baker says the severe weather this season in the South and Northeast is also having a big impact on airport revenues. He says airport officials are in the process of calculating financial losses from the recent storms.
“Certainly, the loss of flights hurts because of the fact that means less passengers coming through the airport. One day of passengers is approximately three percent of the month, so if you are down one whole day you can be down three percent in passengers as far as year-end year-over numbers and that certainly is going to impact your bottom line.”
Baker says around 1.8 million to 2-million passengers come through the Piedmont Triad International Airport each year.
