State Attorney General Roy Cooper is warning North Carolinians to be wary of scammers targeting people affected by Hurricane Arthur.

The summer storm season is a peak time for scammers who may exploit individuals who need home repairs or storm cleanup work. But it's not only the storms that bring out the con artists this time of year. Some try to take advantage by offering cheap vacations or discount concert tickets with deals that seem too good to be true. Many times they are.

WFDD's Paul Garber talked with Brian Wright, president and CEO Of the Better Business Bureau of Northwest North Carolina. Wright shares some tips about how to avoid summer scams.

Wright says it's important to do some research before purchasing goods or services, and that's especially true when providers come door to door. He says to remember that time is on the buyer's side, and not to let salespeople give you an unnecessary feeling of urgency. The BBB's Web site also allows users to search for accredited businesses by Zip Code, and also to file a complaint if you feel you've been ripped off.

But Wright warns that once a scammer gets your money, it's awfully hard to get it back.
