Winston-Salem Adds Funds to Gun Buyback Program

Winston-Salem's first gun buyback in 20 years was so successful that more money is being put into the program.

A total of 364 guns were turned in March 15. The response was so great that organizers ran out of cash and had to start issuing vouchers. Earlier this week, the city council approved about $12,000 to pay off those vouchers and another $10,000 for a second  buyback in April.

Does the gun buyback program make the city safer? Bryan Blakley, a Winston-Salem assistant police chief, says that's a hard question to answer.

No vouchers will be issued for the second buyback. Blakely says once the money is gone, the program will be over. The April 12 event will be held from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at First Waughtown Baptist Church on Moravia Street in Winston-Salem.
